Food Pantry: September 24, 2013

Our first trip to the food pantry this year was such a special time. Thank you so much for all of the food donations! As you can see in one of the pictures (with all the food on the counter), it allowed us to share a great deal with our community.

After we had carried all of the food inside, unloaded each box and bag and stocked the shelves, a pantry worker thanked the children. He was moved to tears, overcome by the fact that these children were giving to people they didn’t even know. He said that he’s seen many people volunteer in the pantry, but that our students were the most joyful workers he’s ever seen. What a privilege to be the hands and feet of Jesus, loving people in our community.

After working in the food pantry, we visited their bakery and bought some of their yummy treats. Then the men who work in the Apple Store invited us in to see their huge apple cooler, and they offered each child a delicious honeycrisp apple. They pointed out the huge pumpkins growing in their garden.

On our way back to school, we stopped at Friendship Park and enjoyed the beautiful fall day. 🙂

Food Pantry on Tuesday: Donations Needed

food pantry donations needed

Every class at OVCS has a class ministry — an opportunity to be the Hands and Feet of Jesus in the community. Our class has the great privilege of serving at the York County Homeless Shelter Food Pantry in Alfred. Our first trip is tomorrow, and we need food! So far we have one box (thank you, Mr. and Mrs. Fassnacht!) and one bag (thank you, Mr. and Mrs. Harrington!) of food. I should have emphasized this before now, and I do apologize for this. We appreciate all food donations — it’s such a blessing to be able to feed the hungry in our own community.

When I read Matthew 25:31-46, it makes me even more grateful for this wonderful opportunity to serve in the food pantry. Here’s a portion of it:

31 “But when the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then He will sit on His glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered before Him; and He will separate them from one another, as the shepherd separates the sheep from the goats; 33 and He will put the sheep on His right, and the goats on the left.

34 “Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. 35 For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in; 36 naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me.’ 37 Then the righteous will answer Him, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, and feed You, or thirsty, and give You something to drink? 38 And when did we see You a stranger, and invite You in, or naked, and clothe You? 39 When did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ 40 The King will answer and say to them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me.’

Wow. What an amazing opportunity our students have to serve the Lord in our community.
